How to set up flexible gating in a learning path
When a learning path is first created, its learning progression is set to Self-Paced by default. To use flexible gating, you must change the learning progression to Fixed-Pace.
To set up flexible gating in a learning path:
- Navigate to the Courses page.
- Click to select the desired course.
- Navigate to the Learning Paths tab.
- Select the desired learning path or create a new learning path.
- Click on the Settings sub-tab.
- Click on the Learning Progression sub-tab.
- Select Fixed-Pace in the Pacing settings.
- Once Fixed-Pace is selected, the system automatically gates all units except the final unit. To remove gating from a unit:
- In the Gating & Days Due table, locate the Gated by Due Date column.
- Find the unit you want to un-gate.
- Uncheck the checkbox to remove the gate.
- Enter the Days Due.
- Click Save.
Note: Two units can share the same Days Due value. However, if they do, the first unit will automatically become un-gated when you click Save.
Scenario: A Four-Unit Course with Unit 3 Gated
Below is an example showing how gating works when Unit 3 is gated and Unit 4 cannot be opened until Unit 3's due date has passed.
Configuration steps:
- Set the learning path to Fixed-Pace.
- Uncheck the gating boxes for Unit 1 and Unit 2.
- Make sure Unit 3 remains gated (checked).
- Enter Days Due values, for example:
- Unit 1 (Un-gated) - Days Due: 3
- Result: Learner can begin immediately and move on upon completion of the unit.
- Unit 2 (Un-gated) - Days Due: 7
- Result: Unlocks as soon as Unit 1 is completed.
- Unit 3 (Gated) - Days Due: 14
- Result: Unlocks as soon as Unit 2 is completed.
- Unit 4 (Not gated, final unit) - Days Due: 21
- Result: Unlocks once Unit 3 is completed and the Unit 3 due date has passed.
How this works for learners:
- The learner completes Unit 1, 2, and 3 freely.
- Once the learner completes Unit 3, Unit 4 still stays locked until after Day 14 has passed.
- On Day 14 and upon completion of Unit 3, Unit 4 becomes available.
