How do mastery and grading work in Diagnostic Mode?

Diagnostic is an optional and configurable mode of student learning experience which can be enabled by the Course Designers.

Diagnostic (a.k.a. Initial Diagnostic) is used to quickly and effectively measure student knowledge in a concept to determine if the student is already proficient in the concept or if the concept needs to be mastered by the student. Course designers can enable the initial diagnostic by setting up the number of questions per concept as well as the question type and Bloom's Taxonomy level used. This initial diagnostic can be specified in the settings for each unit (for a unit level diagnostic) or when setting up the learning path (for a course level diagnostic). The system will then pull from this pool of questions to form the diagnostic. The outcome of an initial diagnostic is a clear demarcation of concepts the student shows proficiency in and those concepts the student needs to learn.

There are two types of initial diagnostics:
  1. Initial diagnostics for the entire course
  2. Initial diagnostics for the unit
Note: If a course has an initial diagnostic set for the entire course, then it cannot have an initial diagnostic set for the unit.

The student will answer each question in turn until all diagnostic questions for a concept are completed.  If a student meets or exceeds the mastery percentage for a concept during the initial diagnostic, then that concept is marked as "Mastered" and they will not have to review the learning workflow for that concept. Otherwise, if a student does not meet or exceed the mastery percentage for a concept, then they will need to master that concept by completing the learning workflow of that concept.
