How do mastery and grading work in Learning Mode?

In the Learning Mode (not to be confused with the diagnostic mode), the student moves through the learning path (Unit > Concept) and completes learning one concept at a time in the sequence per the Learning Path. A student cannot move to the next concept or unit in the learning path until each concept and unit in the sequence are completed. Student completes each concept by following the Learning Workflow of the concept. At the end of the learning workflow of each concept, mastery and grade are calculated for the student in that concept based on the student's performance.

Mastery:

  1. Mastery will be calculated based on the Weighted Results of all items included in the concept learning workflow. Weighted Results take into account each item's Item Type Weight (Pre-Assessment, Self-Check, Post-Assessment, Summative, and Pilot) inherited from the Organization or Course settings.
  2. If the student scores at or above the mastery target percent in a concept, the concept will be marked as mastered, and the next concept will be unlocked.
  3. If the student scores below the mastery target percent in a concept, the concept will be marked for remediation. See below how Remediation works on the edapt platform.
    1. After the student completes remediation, they will be given a second and last opportunity to go through the concept learning workflow to demonstrate their mastery. Mastery will be calculated based on the student's performance in this second and last try as follows:
      1. if they score at or above the mastery target, they will be marked as mastered in that concept, and the next concept will be unlocked.
      2. if they score below the mastery target, they will be marked as "Needs Intervention" but completed that concept, and the next concept will be unlocked.

Grading:

    1. If grading is set at the Concept level:
      1. the grade will be calculated and finalized only after the concept is completed
      2. the grade is the same as the mastery calculation, i.e., if the mastery was 82% then the grade pushed to Canvas is 82%.
      3. If the concept is not completed on time (before the Unit due date), the Faculty will need to review and finalize the grade for the late submission by applying their own judgement and manually overwriting the grade for that concept
    2. If grading is set at the Unit level:
      1. the grade will be calculated and finalized only after the entire unit is completed (all concepts in the unit are completed)
      2. the grade in this case will be the average of Mastery across all concepts in the Unit, i.e., 82%, 80%, 76%, 74% mastery across 4 concepts = 78% grade for the Unit (pushed to Canvas).
      3. If the unit is not completed on time (before the Unit due date), the Faculty will need to review and finalize the grade for the late submission by applying their own judgement and manually overwriting the grade for that unit
